So, I'm new to this community, and new to the world of musical injuries. Ha.

I'm a violist having some issues with tendonitis in my left wrist. The problem originates from the tendon on the outside of the wrist (the one below the pinky finger) and kind of runs down the arm when things get painful. It's basically from overuse (yes, I'm a dork and I practice a lot) and I'm having a bit of trouble bouncing back. My doctor gave me a brace and told me to take ibuprofen like candy and ice it a few times a day. This is working... sort of. A mixture of Pilates, yoga, and a little Alexander have been helpful also.

Just thought I'd drop in and introduce myself. :-)

Have you explored acupuncture? I find it works wonders for the Tenosynovitus that I was diagnosed with. It hasn't disappeared, but I can manage it and the pain, which is the main thing. Just a suggestion . . .

Acupuncture sounds like a good idea... too bad I have a horrible needle phobia. Ha.

Just trying to get through the next few weeks, then I'll be sure to take lots of time off and rest. I'm pretty sure it's from overuse, since I've never had this problem before. Scary thing is, I'm starting to notice more tension in my neck and right wrist also. Hopefully it'll stay manageable through the slew of gigs/performances coming up.

My friend who plays the trumpet says he takes at least one day off a week. It helps him out mentally and physically... maybe a good way to reduce injuries? How many of you take time off on a weekly basis? Just curious, because I know it's probably something I should start doing...

well it is generally recommended that a pianist shouldn't practice more than 4 hours a day.... in practice, this is generally ignored. 7-10 hour days is not unheard of, especially if preparing for a specific event. The Left-Hand alone pianist Leon Fleischer lost the use of his right hand through overpractice. As have many of the greats from the past done injury to themselves.

so, my recommendation, always, always, always properly warm up, no short-cuts. after that, either take a day off a week or shorten your daily practice schedule. These are good recommendation for pianists.... I only assume they are relevant towards the violin.

I know it is tough, we as musicians look for reasons to practice, not reasons to avoid practice.

Just returned from Hot Springs Music Festival where I discovered this book. Huge amount of info on anatomy and physiology. The primary "tool" you need is a ball, fist-sized or smaller
